Why Pressure Is the Secret Weapon of Elite Performers (In Sport & Business)
The Story
In this solo episode, David Sammel breaks down what elite performers do differently when pressure is highest and why clarity, not motivation, is the real competitive edge.
Drawing on decades of experience with world-class athletes, Wimbledon champions, and Premier League organizations, David shows how top performers think, decide, and execute when it matters most and how the same principles apply to business leaders and entrepreneurs.
This episode sets the mindset for Serve Your Business, David’s upcoming high-performance workshop, where elite sport meets executive decision-making.

Where elite sport meets executive performance.
The mental game that separates champions from everyone else works exactly the same in business. Most business owners think pressure is their enemy. They try to eliminate nerves before big presentations or tend to stay calm during crisis. Which is right? And they want their minds basically to. Shut up and cooperate. But that's backwards. Best athletes don't eliminate pressure. They accept it as proof that they are doing well.
Hi, everybody. David Samuel with my podcast. And today I want you to picture this. You're about to close the biggest deal of your career. Your heart's racing. Your mind's offering seventeen different reasons why this could all go wrong. And in the moment, the quality of your internal voice, how you talk to yourself, not just what you say, determines how you show up. As you know, I've coached for over 35 years. Everyone from Olympians to Pro tour winning players, teaching them how to perform when everything's on the line.
And here's what I know. The mental game that separates champions from everyone else works exactly the same in business. Most business owners think pressure is their enemy. They try to eliminate nerves before big presentations or attempt to stay calm during crisis. Which is right? And they want their minds basically to. Shut up and cooperate. But that's backwards. The best athletes don't eliminate pressure. They accept it as proof that they are doing well. Of course, they have similar fears and doubts, but the difference?
They've learned to manage them better than others. And the framework that really helps them to serve on match point in front of thousands of people are the same tools that work when you're pitching to investors, navigating difficult conversations or making decisions that could make or break deals. Here's something on the 29th of January, I'm running a different type of workshop. It's called Serve Your Business and I'm bringing 28 business owners to Ace Paddle in Stoke on Then we translate that experience into business frameworks that you can use immediately.
I'm joined by two of EU KS top paddle coaches, Joel Dovey Dovey of Above and Beyond and Joe Patterson from Connect to Paddle. We're going to show you three things. Firstly, how elite athletes think, decide and execute when it matters most, and how these exact patterns apply to business leadership. Secondly, why your internal voice? The tone you use, not just the words, affects your nervous system more than any external factor. Change how you talk to yourself and you change your performance capacity.
Thirdly, the difference between process focus and outcome, hunger, and why you need both. So many business coaches tell you to focus on the process, not results. Really, that's rubbish. Results do matter. We'll show you how to balance both without the anxiety that usually comes with wanting to win. And here's something else. There's one question, in my opinion, that when answered honestly, guarantees success. And I'm in unveiling this question at this fantastic program that we've got. This is the thing that determines whether you reach your potential or plateau.
And here's the reality. How you run your business when you're under pressure is so important. Everyone is good when it's going well, but how are you under pressure when it's not going well? Can you make clear decisions when the pressure is very high? How do you maintain confidence when doubts creeping in? Because this is the difference between winning and losing. It's not the strategy, it's not the business plan. It's in the moment when you I'm convinced you need to play it safe, but you know deep down that courage is the answer.
This isn't a massive workshop. It's for 28 business owners who really want to lift their performance and level up. So we've got limited space with genuine core time and not hundreds of people. So the event takes place from 9:30 to 1:30 on January the 29th at Ace Paddle in Stoke on Trent. So if you're building something and you want an edge that separates really the great ones from the good ones, then this is a place for you. And remember that question that I mentioned? It's the one that guarantees success if you answer it honestly.
You want to be there when I unveil it because once you hear it, you can't unhear it. And it will change every high stakes moment for you. So registration is open, the link is in the show notes, and it's limited to only 28 people. And it's going to fill up very soon. So get on it. I'm going to sign off now and hopefully see you on the court. And of course, you can find me at [email protected] if you have any questions and DM me on various social messages. And of course, share this with any friends if you're a business owner and you think that they would benefit from this.
And finally, next week, I have a great guest, New Zealand's first tennis Olympic medal winner and the founder of High Impact Athletes. So really don't miss this unbelievable conversation that I have with Marcus Daniel. See you next week.
